André has over 11 years’ experience leading strategic and transformational change projects within the legal industry both within private practice and in-house teams. He currently heads up the Legal Operations team at DeepL, where he’s driving a companywide collaborative approach to improving the effectiveness of the legal team.

Tom McGuffie, Senior Associate, A&O Shearman

Tom is a founding member of the Markets Innovation Group (MIG), a group of lawyers, technologists and developers, who are focused on the creation of innovative solutions for clients that help them meet large-scale legal and regulatory challenges.  Tom has been featured by the Financial Times as an innovative practitioner in law.

Tom is a key member of the firm’s market-leading, cross-practice and multijurisdictional AI advisory practice; he works with some of the largest companies in the world on the safe deployment of AI in their business, as well as on broader legal and compliance digitisation projects. He has also played a leading role in the development of A&O Shearman’s own AI strategy, including internal development, assessment of third-party tools, governance and risk management.

Tom was at the forefront of the development and delivery of MarginMatrix (a regulatory compliance and repapering tool, and related joint venture with Deloitte to help several global banks with the negotiation of thousands of contracts), BrexitMatrix (a workflow, document automation and outreach tool for migration of trading documentation to EU entities), IBORMatrix (a system designed to facilitate the transition away from LIBOR and other interest rates, involving an innovative approach to the use of AI), and more recently, ContractMatrix (A&O Shearman’s latest innovation, developed in partnership with Microsoft and Harvey, which uses generative AI to streamline contract drafting, review and negotiation).

Tom also leads MIG’s work on the digitalisation of our clients’ legal and operational processes, with his utilities being used daily by multiple large financial institutions.

Tom’s background is in OTC derivatives and he has experience across all major asset classes.

 

Kai Hessing, Director of IT Operations, CMS Legal Services EEIG

Kai Hessing is an accomplished IT Director with 30 years of diverse experience in the IT sector, including 16 years in senior IT management roles across various European and global companies. Since April 2022, he has served as the IT Director at CMS Legal Services EEIG, where he directs the IT department of the central internal service entity responsible for delivering IT services, IT products, cybersecurity, and global vendor agreements to all CMS firms. CMS is an international organization of independent law firms operating globally.

Kai collaborates closely with all Heads of IT and Heads of Innovation worldwide and chairs the global group of CIOs. He is also a co-founder and active member of the internal AI working and research group, as well as a member of the global Cybersecurity committee. His expertise includes a robust background in cybersecurity and ISO certifications.
